Tragedy Strikes Apalachee High: Teen Arrested After Deadly School Shooting

A tragic incident unfolded at Apalachee High School in Barrow County, Georgia, where a 14-year-old student allegedly opened fire, leading to the deaths of four people and injuring several others. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director, Chris Hosey, provided details during a news conference, stating that the shooting happened around 10:20 a.m. on September 4th.

When the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office got word of an active shooter at the school, deputies were quick to respond and coordinate with school resource officers, who confronted the shooter soon after arriving. The suspect, a student named Colt Gray, reportedly surrendered immediately upon contact. Authorities have since been speaking with him to gather more information.

The tragic toll includes four lives lost—two students and two teachers. Additionally, nine others were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals. Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith mentioned that all nine victims suffered gunshot wounds. Clearly moved by the event, Smith shared his personal connection to the community, having grown up there and with his own kids attending local schools. “My heart hurts for these kids. My heart hurts for our community,” he said.

Calling the shooting an act of “evil,” Smith emphasized that “hate will not prevail in this county,” insisting that love and community strength will rise above the violence.

The investigation is still ongoing, and things are moving quickly. As for Gray, he is facing murder charges and will be tried as an adult. More updates are expected as the story develops.
