Chaos on I-75: Gunman at Large After Multiple Shot in Kentucky

A scary scene unfolded Saturday evening along a highway near London, Kentucky, where multiple people were shot, and a manhunt for the gunman is now underway.

It all went down around 7 p.m. local time when the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office reported that “numerous people were shot” on Interstate 75, about nine miles north of London. The highway was immediately shut down, and authorities were on high alert. By 9:30 p.m., they reopened the road, but the shooter was still on the loose.

The University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, which is about 90 miles from London, confirmed it had already received at least two patients from the shooting, though they didn’t release any updates on their conditions.

The sheriff’s office named 32-year-old Joseph A. Couch as a person of interest in the shooting. He’s described as a White man, about 5-foot-10, weighing 154 pounds. A photo of Couch has been shared with the public as authorities try to track him down. Meanwhile, Kentucky State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms are in the area, asking residents to stay indoors as they handle what they call a “critical incident.”

Details are still pretty murky—no exact number of victims has been confirmed yet, and officials are staying tight-lipped until they know more. Governor Andy Beshear took to social media to let people know the situation is being taken seriously and to warn everyone to steer clear of the area around exit 49 on I-75. He promised more updates as soon as they have more information.

Stay safe out there, Kentucky!
