Freshman Injured in Park Shooting Sparks Lockdown at South Oak Cliff High School

Hey everyone, got some concerning news coming out of Dallas, specifically South Oak Cliff High School. The school went into lockdown on Monday after a freshman girl was grazed by a bullet in a park right near the campus.

Here’s the scoop: There was some kind of brawl going down among four or five guys at a park across from the school on South Marsalis Ave. Things escalated, and a gun went off, with a stray bullet grazing the girl. She managed to run to the school’s football field, where some quick-thinking coaches got her the help she needed. She was taken to a hospital, and luckily, it looks like she’ll be okay.

District 4 Councilwoman Carolyn Arnold King was on the scene and had some strong words about how this all could have been avoided. “They could have resolved this through some kind of conflict resolution or even gone to a counselor,” she said. “But for some reason, it seems so easy for young people to get their hands on guns, and that’s really troubling.”

The shooting didn’t happen on school grounds, and the lockdown lasted about 30-40 minutes, according to the school district. As of now, there’s no word on any arrests or charges, and it’s not clear if any of those involved in the park fight are even students at the high school.

This incident comes just days after another tragic event in the area, where a 17-year-old named David Washington was shot and killed near John Kincaide Stadium. Police announced that they arrested a 16-year-old suspect on Monday in connection with that shooting.

Councilwoman Arnold King summed it up perfectly: “Make this make sense… you can’t make sense of it.” She mentioned that there are plans to add more lighting, cameras, and smart sensors in South Oak Cliff’s Renaissance Park to hopefully prevent stuff like this from happening again.

The school district also announced that counselors will be on hand at South Oak Cliff High School to support students on Tuesday. It’s been a rough few days for the community, and it’s clear that more needs to be done to ensure safety around our schools. Stay safe, everyone!
