Rickenbacker Cyclist Shooting: Self-Defense Claim Unravels

Kadel Piedrahita took the stand again on Friday as his trial continues for the 2019 shooting of cyclist Alexis Palencia on the Rickenbacker Causeway. Piedrahita is facing a second-degree murder charge, as well as aggravated assault with a firearm for allegedly threatening another cyclist during the same incident.

In court, Prosecutor Arvind Singh worked to poke holes in Piedrahita’s self-defense claim, arguing that the two men already had bad blood before the fatal confrontation on August 14, 2019. As part of the prosecution’s evidence, jurors watched a selfie video posted by Piedrahita just days before the shooting, where he angrily ranted about Palencia. The video even shows him riding up to Palencia on his motorcycle and kicking the spokes of the victim’s bike.

Piedrahita testified that he was being attacked by Palencia and two others at the time of the shooting. “I got several punches to my face that day,” he told the jury. However, the prosecution presented photos of Piedrahita taken hours after the incident, casting doubt on his claims of a physical assault. In another piece of evidence, a video showed one of the men Piedrahita claimed was attacking him actually arriving on a bicycle after the shooting took place.

While being re-examined by his defense team, Piedrahita tried to explain the video footage, saying he wasn’t trying to kick Palencia’s bike—he just lost his balance.

After jurors left the courtroom, the judge dismissed a request by the defense to recall a witness. The defense had tried to bring up a claim Piedrahita made the previous day about the victim being armed, a claim the judge quickly shot down. He reminded the defense that there had never been any mention of a gun in the case’s five-year history, despite Piedrahita having had multiple attorneys.

The judge didn’t hold back, saying, “No firearm was ever located by anyone involved in this investigation… It’s as if it magically appeared.”
